Saturday November 16th will be etched in history as the day the Ghana Police Women Basketball team beat their rivals Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) to take home the 2019 Accra Basketball Trophy.
The Cup is named after a celebrated Ghanaian Basketball Coach of blessed memory.
In a ‘best of three’ final series versus GRA, Police had on Wednesday November 13th won Game 1 and only needed one more win to complete the sweep. GRA on the other hand needed a win to stay alive in the series.
The game started with Police guard Mavis Martey hitting a three pointer on the first possession. Afia Kobe of GRA responded with her own three on the very next possession. Afia followed that with a beautiful assist to Matilda immediately after. Later in the first quarter, with the score tied at 8, there was an injury to one of the Police players which took a few minutes to resolve. The first quarter ended 16 – 15 in favour of GRA.
At the commencement of the second quarter, Police took over the lead as they went up by three points. This was brief as GRA retook the lead and opened up a five-point lead. With the score at 24 -19, Police forward Georgina (Maafio) came up with a three-point play bringing Police within 2 points. The two teams exchanged baskets until Police went up 29 -28 with about 3 minutes to go in the quarter. The first half ended 29 – 33 in favour of Police.
In the third, GRA came out strong early and retook the lead 37 – 36. After a technical foul charged on the Police Coach and some excellent offensive play, GRA opened up a six-point lead.
It was at this point that Zenabu of Police took over the game. She went crazy from the three-point line scoring a total of 26 points with 21 of them from the three point line. At the end of the third quarter, Police had a commanding 11 point lead. The score was 58 – 47.
The fourth quarter was academic for Police. With Maafio, Sadat Barikisu, Mavis and Zenabu on the floor most of the time, GRA struggled on both ends of the floor. GRA despite having a deeper bench had several players in foul trouble further deepening their woes on defence.
The game ended 59 – 80 in favour of Police. The big four contributed 76 points out of the 80. The big story was of course Zenabu who hit 54% of her three-point attempts. Sadat added 21 points, Georgina 18 and Mavis 11.
Overall it has been a great season of women’s basketball. With 61 games played since April 2019, fans have been thrilled to some really interesting games. Sadat Barikisu led the league in scoring with 20.23 points per game. Matilda Gordon led in the rebounds category with 14.35 rebounds per game. Sadat led in steals and assists with 4.6 and 2.5 respectively. Matilda led in blocks with almost 2 blocks per game.
On account of a better efficiency score driven by fewer turnovers than Sadat, Matilda Gordon of GRA was declared Most Valuable Player.
