The much-anticipated Division One playoffs for the Top 4 teams tipped off this Friday 8th November at the Lebanon House, Tudu.
On Match Day One of the playoffs featured 2nd place Adenta Leopards against 3rd place Fire Service.
During the league the Fire Service beat Leopards in the first round and Leopards won the reverse match up. This match up was therefore expected to be tight however it turned out to be a blowout for Leopards. It would seem Fire Service showed up only to play the first quarter at the end of which they led 24 – 21 after taking a commanding lead.
Credit to Coach Meme Falconer and his Adenta boys who did not panic. They stuck to the game plan and allowed the best point guard in the league, Joel Tham to run the plays. By the end of the second half, Leopards had a 15-point lead. The lead ballooned to 20 points at the end of the third quarter.
The fourth quarter was a practice run for the Leopards. They showed of their trap defence, deep threes and off the board fast break jams. The game ended 91 -65.
Leopards have thus qualified to play the winner of league leaders, CEPS and 4th placed Tema Youth (TY) at 6.30 pm on Saturday.
CEPS were runaway winners finishing the season with 16 wins and no losses. TY on the other hand won 9 games and lost 7.
CEPS therefore won both games played against TY during the season. In Round 1, the score was 77-36. In the reverse match in the 2nd round, CEPS beat TY 68 – 39. On paper, it may seem that CEPS has the obvious advantage however, if you have followed the game in the recent past you would know that the Tema team are capable of pulling a surprise – if they are able to assemble all team members for the game.
The performance TY put up against Reformers to qualify for the playoffs is an example of a team that can turn it up when needed.
The winner of tomorrow’s game qualifies to play in the Best of Three Finals with the winner of the Fire Service and Adenta Leopards game. The losers will play in the third place game.
