As the 2019 Accra Basketball League nears completion, the playoff picture is getting clearer.
Police, Reformers and Warriors currently occupying the 7th to 9th spots on the log are effectively eliminated and will take no further part after playing their 16th game season.
For the six other teams, there is an opportunity to play in the MTN Sponsored Playoffs which will comprise the top 4 only. There will be a one game only semi final followed by a final which will be a best of three akin to the NBA best of seven format.
Per the latest league table, Braves of CEPS and Adenta Leopards seem to have locked the 1st and 2nd positions. Three teams, Fire Service, CYO and Tema Youth are in contention for the 3rd and 4th slots.
CYO today played and won relatively easily, their 16th game of the season. With an 8 – 8 record, CYO ended the season with 24 points and are currently tied with Leopards who are in second position. Leopards however have two games in hand and are likely to increase their point tally.
CYO’s true competition will be with Fire Service and Tema Youth who have 22 and 21 points respectively with each having two more games to play. Despite an impressive season it is likely that CYO will not be in the 2019 playoffs.
Tudu Magic who also have had a relatively good season currently have 21 points with one more game to play. They are thus mathematically eliminated even though they are ahead of Tema Youth on the log.
The Play Offs are set to commence in the middle of next month.
